Herniated Disc

Understanding a Herniated Disc

The human spine isn’t just one bone. It consists of multiple parts working together to provide flexibility, strength, connection, and shock absorption all in one. The spine absorbs shock with cushions between the vertebrae. These cushions provide a natural pillow effect and prevent bones from impacting each other. Under normal conditions and good health, these cushions provide a tremendous benefit, allowing the spine to work, twist, compress, and carry loads. However, when an individual disc is misaligned, bulges to one side, or ruptures, it is known as a herniated disc.

Different Hickey Area Cases Have Different Conditions

You might not even know you have a herniated disc. Or, it might be extremely painful. This is because the breakdown in the disc’s integrity can happen in several different ways. A bulging disc is essentially the first stage of disc failure.

Over time, the bulging disc material can push out and begin to affect everything else in the spinal column. Extreme pain occurs when the bulging material pushes against a nerve, and more rarely when the vertebrae begin to contact each other. Herniated disc symptoms are not limited to the lower back. Symptoms may also appear in the neck, the middle back, or even near the tailbone.

How Herniated Discs Happen

The most common cause of disc degeneration is age. The spine assembly becomes weak over time, and the disc wall may fail on its own. A sudden impact or twist can also cause disc failure. Disc wall failure might occur as a result of a car accident, or a serious sport injury. Some people are genetically predisposed to herniated discs due to the genes passed on to them from relatives.

Various Treatments are Possible

Contrary to popular opinion, most herniated discs can be treated without surgery. Many cases simply need rest and topical treatments like ice and heat to trigger internal healing by the body’s repair systems. Recovery might take a few weeks. In these general cases, resting and avoiding strenuous activity is the standard approach. Physical therapy from a chiropractor and stretching could also help.

In more serious cases, special treatment may be necessary. A medical spine specialist should make this diagnosis, and various imaging tests will be applied. Periodic anti-inflammatory injections may be applied, giving the body more time to heal without debilitating pain. Surgery is required in the most serious cases.
